This seems to be the case on Enigma 0.92; I can reproduce it
semi-consistently by dropping everything, taking the key, then hitting
a thief and the lock at about the same time, then possibly the lock
again. I think, as you said, that the key gets used for the lock, but
then the thief makes it disappear. Then I hit the lock again which
transfers the key to my inventory, but the key doesn't exist anymore,
so Enigma crashes -- or some similar chain of events.
Now where did I put my copy of the source code... ? *rummages through
directories*
