I'm not for changing any old and established default, but from the
perspective of a new user it at least avoids placing this scary warning
in the init file:

   ;; custom-set-variables was added by Custom.
   ;; If you edit it by hand, you could mess it up, so be careful.
   ;; Your init file should contain only one such instance.
   ;; If there is more than one, they won't work right.

The format is (once again) too established to be worth changing, I
