IIRC the whole concept of straight.el is based around pulling packages
off individual authors' repositories.

I don't think that's what we want to do in Emacs.  For example, one such
package provides integration with Apple's dis-service Siri and its
proprietary client shipped with macOS.

Apart from installing packages in such a haphazard fashion, I really
don't see what else straight.el does better than package.el.
