I don't see a fundamental flaw in d-s-m. I see a bug in Wdired.

Create a new mode for what you want, please. It's not about
"reimplementing" `delete-selection-mode'.

Call your new mode whatever you want. But IMO
"delete-select-mode" is not a great name. Besides sowing
confusion (obviously) with `delete-selection-mode',
"delete-select" is meaningless/contradictory or at best unclear.

`shift-select-mode' is OK as a name because it uses the Shift key
to select. It doesn't require an existing selection.

`delete-selection-mode' also makes sense, because it deletes
a selection - selected text. The selection must exist - the text
must have been selected - before it can be deleted.
