Yes, this is natural to expect a Unicode input method producing a
single Unicode character.  Then how about the following rules:

/.      "․" U2024 # ONE DOT LEADER
/..     "‥" U2025 # TWO DOT LEADER
/...    "…" ellipsis # HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS
