An 'm' space is enough.

Disabling the menu-bar you can tell them about the way to enable the
menues again.  Let the user confirm this message.

I think the same.  Solution: pop up a message and/or make the [GUI]
thingie highly visible ("red")--the Gnus Gnu is blue, but unclickable
(I'm not aware of any other modeline picture; but I didn't try all the
new or updated features).
