This has a disadvantage of pushing the rest of mode-line info to the
right, potentially out of sight (especially for long file names).
People are already complaining that the indicators to the left of the
buffer name eat up too much of the precious mode-line space.  (I think
we need a mode that displays the buffer name in some abbreviated
form, btw.)

So I'd suggest to avoid putting this on the mode line's left part.
