well, even with the X11 backend there were occasional hiccups - in
particular I haven't seen Denemo hanging on the pthread-join call on
exit in my Debian Wheezy build since the last round of threading fixes.
So I  think we can be optimistic that our threading woes are at an end
(until the gtk people decide to change something again ...)

yes, that sounds good - can you easily apply patches to the scm files?
Not critical, but for now Compact Chord Charts require patches which you
applied within gub, however users can always add the patches themselves
with guidance.

It is highly desirable to keep gtk3 - I'm always having to look over my
shoulder to avoid breaking the gtk2 build. So, keeping everything that
you used to create the current mingw zip/exe files but with imported
lilypond bundle sounds ideal.
