I wouldn't oppose such a patch, but the thing here is that it needs to be
tested for a longer stretch of time.

What happened is that the first 10000 or so of invocations of git went
smoothly, no freezing of the Gtk interface. But after that the interface
became unresponsive for a part of it. Part of the Gtk widgets operated
normally, and another part did nothing, notably the editor. I attribute this
to a bug in the Glib part where the git process was called, and that this bug
would only surface after the 10000 or so invocations. I could not reliably
reproduce the bug, but users started to complain about it, and the bug went
away when bibledit-git was used, so that the invocations of git were moved
"out of sight" of the Gtk interface, since bibledit-git does not use Gtk, only
Glib.
