Follow-up Comment #22, patch #7559 (project avrdude): There are level shifter ICs... as you know very well. And e.g. the MAX232 doesn't translate more than RX/TX. But maybe we should forget about RS-232. Nobody with a sane mind uses that anymore (industrial stuff excluded for now).
