As Galen Seitz wrote:stk500 needs some mods IIRC for parallel high-voltage mode. The STK500 can easily be reconfigured for parallel HV mode. It just involves the supplied cables and jumpers, nothing I would call a mod.Well, but avrdude doesn't support HV mode for STK500 (to the best of my knowledge).
It's a bit hard to plug smd chips into a programming socket of a parallel programmer, which probably explains the lack of such projects on the net (post by Klaus is probably the best and only one apart from full stk500). I'm building a small dipswitch programmer with an isp jtag and spi socket so that if a test program messes the fuses, i can program the fuses directly by twiddling some switches on it to HV program them in parallel mode.
