It probably makes a huge difference on Windows (NT+) whether your
programmer is connected through a serial port (like the STK) where
access goes via normal operating system IO, or it's connected to a
parallel port where avrdude has to bypass the OS since there's no
OS-supplied driver to access the parallel port for arbitrary
(non-printer) low-level IO.

As i'm writing this, i just wonder how all those companies selling
software protection dongles are facing this situation though.

(On those Unix platforms where avrdude supports parallel port access,
FreeBSD and Linux, parallel port IO is also routed through the OS
since these systems do provide OS support for arbitrary parallel port
IO. This is of course the far superior solution.)
