Too much verification work required to ensure nothing is broken.

But you've got a point: changing the default handler's behaviour is
something that would better be in 1.6.0 rather than getting it later
into the 1.6 branch.  I'll give it a try before starting the 1.6.0
release preparation.  If it works out well, I'll do it.
