First ft2demos is not a library. It is a set of small applications
designed for testing the freetype2 library.

You download the sources for freetype2 and build them.
Yes, you already have the library installed on your machine, but the
ft2demos package wasn't designed to be built against an installed
library but against a test library being worked on.
