SOLVED!
Successful configure occurred after entering following in root console:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
Verified the subsequent install worked as it does incorporate the new bugfix
I was looking for.
Frankly, it's not obvious to me why this worked. ;-)
