Looking at this page, it sould seem that the problem is not with the msgfmt 
command,
but a few lines before:


[  263s] make[2]: *** No rule to make target 'src/ui/gui/glade-wrapper.in', 
needed by 'all-am'.  Stop.
[  263s] make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....


Do you have src/ui/gui/glade-wrapper.in ?  It should be in the distribution for 
1.5.0
