in general it's standard practice to use plain text only for mailing lists and 
news
groups for size reasons.  The HTML adds only a couple hundred bytes, but for
compatability it also adds your text as plain text thus the email is more than 
twice
as large as need be... now multiple that by several hundered lists users and you
have one hell of a lot of extra data!

maybe a blurb should be added the mailing list page requesting plain text 
emails?
