I'd be interested in details of the DFU bootloader also.  If you're not too far 
along I have working USB DFU code from ST for the STM32F103.  It's geared for 
their iNemo eval board, but seems to work pretty well on my VL Discovery.  Not 
sure about linux support for it, but there is source for the windows PC-side 
application.

It uses a register setting that the firmware must clear or else it boots back 
into DFU mode.  It also has a software command for exiting the DFU, paired with 
an enter DFU command that can be sent to the firmware.

There is also another bootloader I have that works with Versaloon, so there is 
certainly linux support there.  Haven't tested that one and don't have the 
source, but it probably isn't too hard to get.
