Follow-up Comment #11, bug #61472 (project octave):

Thank you, Anon. Here are Anon's changes rolled up into one hg diff
(attached).

Make check does not crash for the MEX tests with these edits but ASAN
indicates much heavier memory leakage than before, about 1.7 MB instead of 100
KB. I have not isolated the source yet.
