Follow-up Comment #29, bug #59546 (project octave):

Indeed, according to this post [1], it should be enough (at least with miktex
and texlive, the most used latex distributions) to set the -output-directory
option in order to direct both dvi and log files. So here is yet another
patch, which uses this option instead of redirection. 
The output of the compilation is now shown in case of failure together with
the command and the error message if any.
