Attached is a silly example showing one way of having separated and condensed 
wind staves appear and disappear at will, without inserting layout commands 
into the music (content) code — instead, all layout choices are made "at 
runtime" (i.e., in the presentation layer), using the edition-engraver. Note 
that the staff names appear correctly, "automagically".

As I indicated earlier in this thread, there are pros and cons to this method. 
But I hope this clears that part of it up for you.
