My problem is that too much of it is written like the following response from Elaine, which looks like Pprogrammers Only Need Apply.

I get frustrated when I'm looking for something to answer the question "How do I increase/decrease the space between the bottom system and the footer?" ...and cannot find an answer that begins "Here's how to increase/decrease the space between the bottom system and the footer."

If Lilypond such a complex program that I should not expect it to meet me at the intersection I just described?

Thanks,

Insufficient explanation of the object model, the process model and the hierarchy of languages used and how they fit together.  Example:  Does anyone here really understand what a "voice" actually is?  How about an "engraver"?   (If so, I have many follow-up questions for you...)

At the root of the problem is that the documentation allows you to think that lilypond is a program to organize music.  When it is really a program to organize grobs.
