I currently have something looking really nice in PDF in Evince  
(libpoppler28), does not scale down well (disappearing lines) in xpdf  
(libpoppler13, since Ubuntu/Debian simply does not manage producing  
non-crashing newer xpdf versions), and does not render well from PDF in low  
resolution using Ghostscript.

This made me realize that we have several important pipelines to support:

ps ->Ghostscript-> bitmap  website images, low-res, graylevel
ps ->Ghostscript or other-> bitmap  high quality printing, hi-res,  
black&white
ps ->Ghostscript-> PDF ->viewer-> bitmap  previewing
ps ->Ghostscript-> PDF ->Ghostscript or other-> bitmap  printing, standard  
way
ps ->Distiller-> PDF  don't get me started...
