Ties and slurs are different: with a tie, the same note sounds on, with a  
slur, you play it legato: there is no break between notes, but the notes  
are sounded separately.  The difference is small for instruments with  
continuous sounds like strings and wind instrument, but larger for  
percussive instruments like the piano.  Ties and slurs are also formatted  
differently.
