Nope. I took out ./ in the path and changed user mike's shell to bin/bash and
tried to log in sftp. Password failed. Here is the line from/var/log/messages:

Mar 7 11:48:39 thinkpad sshd[28480]: error: PAM: Authentication failure for
illegal user mike from localhost
Mar 7 11:48:39 thinkpad sshd[28480]: Failed keyboard-interactive/pam for
invalid user mike from 127.0.0.1 port 13333 ssh2

Here is what I find in /etc/security:
thinkpad:~ # ls /etc/security
access.conf group.conf limits.conf namespace.conf namespace.init
pam_env.conf time.conf
These all seem to be sample files that could be use to tailor security by
location, time, etc. I don't find anythin uncommented in these

just something I thought of: if you change the shell in /etc/passwd to
/bin/bash, can you log in? If not, what happens if you remove the /./
sequence in the home directory, does that help?

If I recall correctly pam_unix2.so is configured in
/etc/security/somefile, can you check if there is anything relevant there?

regards,
        Olivier
