I don't get this, sorry. So you want animations during layout
calculations and interactive start position selection? How would
implementing that 500 JS line layout algorithm in igraph help with
that?

R is not very good at interactive graphics. If you want interactive
graph layout editing, maybe the options is just to use that JS
library, or Gephi.
