I followed Tamáz suggestion with a slight change. I had to standardize the number of edges so that inner and outer edge number were "comparable" before using the test. This has to do with the fact that communities have different n.

I see that there are several algorithms  published, but I don't know if they are available in igraph or if some of the users have implemented them using R and igraph?
