I don't know much about Linux Mint, but it's my understanding that the
Ubuntu repositories should be usable on Mint. If so, try to use these
Ubuntu PPAs for Octave before you attempt to build it from source:

Thank you all for your answers.

I already tried the unofficial binary for ubuntu (cited by Jordi) and I can confirm it works on Mint-Cinamon but it's 3.6.1 and it does not feature all the OF packages I need. 

Now I have two alternatives:
 -  compile from sources and install packages using pkg (even though my experience on mac os x tells me not to).
-  switch to another distribution.

Any advice?
