You can compile SuiteSparse from source if you want to (I have
done it a few times myself), but if your target machine is running
openSUSE, you no longer need to. Petr Gajdos, who maintains
the Octave project for openSUSE, has built SuiteSparse for Octave
and made it available under the openSUSE Science repository:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/science/openSUSE_12.1/
It works quite well. Thanks Petr!
