Thanks very much again.  That does sound like horrible advice :-) - even to
someone new to linux.  I would very much like to participate in helping
develop the new GUI, but my strengths don't lie in C or python programming
(but they do include MATLAB programming).  For the time being, I may look
into compiling QT independently.
