I have tried again with gcc 4.3 and I no longer get the error (last time I used 4.1). So it was the compiler version...
However, I get another error now. After 15-20 minutes worth of compilation, I get unknown command "leq" in matrix.texi, arith.texi, linalg.texi, optim.texi, stats.texi, and audio.texi

I have searched the list archives and also google and have only found stuff related to tex interpreter. Perhaps this needs to be updated as well ? But which part of it, a latex distribution is huge ...
Besides, I actually don't need the display or graphics capabilities of octave. Can I just disable these, and avoid the whole problem ?
