The unpredictability of the crash makes me suspect race conditions
(although I don't see what exactly could be one) or probably just
general UB introduced some other way.

That's good to know. Does that mean you can help us code a better way
to do this? I see that the movie package is entirely written in C++.
How well can you code in it?
