Well, that can actually be a 100 things ;) I have three quick thoughts in my 
mind why it is failing:

1) Octave.app is build with GCC 4.0.1 (from my XCode tools 2.5 installation).
   Mixing GCC 4.0.1 with GCC 4.3.0 maybe does not work.
2) There has been another big change in the GCC sources between 4.0.1 and 4.3.0
   which causes this problem.
3) hpc's GCC 4.3.0 is not working correctly because of reason xyz...
