Embedding the Octave interactive prompt

Hello everybody,
I need to make the Octave interactive prompt available via a Java application.

I could run Octave as a sub-process, grab stdout, stdin and stderr, and then run
the classical input-output cycle.

*** BUT ***

Is there an easier/more elegant/nicer way to do it?
