I loaded a 35.5MB text file of a (1000,2000) single real
variable WITH the matrix size given to octave 2.1.50 in
only 34 seconds [scaled 30/35.5] on 600MHz machine.  
If you're running 2GHz, you should be able to load the same
in 10 seconds which seems comparable to what you saw in
MatLab.
