My recommendation:

1) Download and install the latest "Development" version of Octave (
2.1.50 ):

www.octave.org


2) Download and install OctaveForge ( somewhat like a 'Toolbox' of
   extra features for Octave ):

octave.sf.net

3) Most MATLAB code that doesn't rely too heavily on Simulink & other
   proprietary toolboxes will run on Octave without too much
   modification.

4) Once you have done the above steps ( or just 1 & 2 ), feel free to
   ask further, specific questions to this list. :-)
