That looks like a bug in gcc 3 - I suggest you report it to the gcc
team: http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html
In the mean time, your best choice (if you're running Linux) may be
the 2.96RH compiler you can find at
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/linux/rawhide/alpha/RedHat/RPMS/
It's doesn't have all the bells and whistles of gcc 3, but it's a lot
more battle proven and has a good performance increase over gcc 2.95.x for
Alpha, in addition to being more C++ compliant (and because of it
being more compliant, you'll need octave 2.1)
