Screen resolution is 1366x768, but I've set GRUB_GFXMODE to auto as I'm not convinced that 1366x768 would work. I should also mention that the system is using an EFI with which I'm not totally familiar and which I guess is at the root of the problem. Where might I find a handbook on EFI in relation to GRUB so that RTFM would have some meaning?Try for a start setting GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console to exclude gfxterm from equation.
Thanks for your support. The effect of your suggestion was: error:no video mode activatedThis looks like progress, but I'm not sure of the direction. For information, there is no video.lst in /boot/grub, but such a file does appear in /boot/grub/x86_64-efi should that be relevant.
Contents of said file are (each on its own line) efi_gop; efi_uga; video_bochs and video_cirrus. None of this looks relevant to the i915 Intel graphics used in this machine.
Any further diagnostic suggestions will be warmly welcomed. Peter HB
