Could someone please advise how I might achieve a menu display on my new
Siemens (sorry, Fujitsu) Lifebook. grub.cfg appears to be sound and I do
hear the GRUB_INIT_TUNE, proving that my modified /etc/default/grub is
being used by update-grub.

Screen resolution is 1366x768, but I've set GRUB_GFXMODE to auto as I'm
not convinced that 1366x768 would work. I should also mention that the
system is using an EFI with which I'm not totally familiar and which I
guess is at the root of the problem. Where might I find a handbook on
EFI in relation to GRUB so that RTFM would have some meaning?

Try for a start setting GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console to exclude gfxterm
from equation.
Thanks for your support. The effect of your suggestion was:

error:no video mode activated

Do you also have GRUB_TERMINAL set? It takes precedence. Try to set it
to "console" as well (or instead).

I tried both suggestions with the same resultant error. I suspect that
GRUB is not finding a driver for my graphics environment: I would have
thought that Intel i915 was fairly common in laptop machines.

For further information I ran xrandir after booting with the following
output:
_______________________________________________________________________
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
344mm x 194mm

   1360x768 59.8 60.0

VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Does this help with a diagnosis?
