Which I constantly do myself too, and that makes me wonder:

Is there any way that groff does/should put anything into the
postscript file about the paper size the page is formatted for,
which in its turn should cause gv and ps2pdf to find out
the proper paper size by itself.

I know too little about postscript myself, but for me it would seem an
obvious thing?

Hmm... As it stands, devps doesn't give a clue about the actual page output size. It would be great if devps output a BoundingBox comment and perhaps a DocumentPaperSizes comment (the latter is a level 2 feature, but groff PS doesn't support level 1 anymore, does it?). Somethng like this:

for a4:

%%BoundingBox: 0 0 596 842
%%DocumentPaperSizes: a4

for US letter:

%%BoundingBox: 0 0 612 792
%%DocumentPaperSizes: letter

BoundingBox takes precedence.
