I disagree.  Don't intermix an ASCII representation of a text with the
output for typesetting!  It *might* be the right solution for a TTY
device to output four dots under some circumstances (but I consider
this ugly), but it is not correct IMHO for anything else.  In most
cases the `markup' for an ellipsis should be done with some
whitespace, using three dots (or even a different representation,
depending on the language).
