Hey Gary!

What if I need to change the type? The configuration commands need to be UBX, 
however, the GPS is streaming NMEA.

I tried your version and your version plus the u-blox type and both cause an 
error:

        gpsctl:ERROR: device must be specified for low-level access.

Sure.

Which is fine, until gpsd has the port.

Once gpsd has captured the GPS on the port, it already knows the type and port, 
so try just:

    gpsctl -x '\x06\x08\xC8\x00\x01\x00\x01\x00'
