Follow-up Comment #3, bug #49932 (project gnuastro):

I fully agree that I messed up - I was trying to delete the 
merged branch on bitbucket using git locally rather than the
bitbucket interface - and I realised too late that "my" master
branch on bitbucket needs to either exactly mathc the commit
history on savannah, or else be fast-forwardable to the savannah
master version.

The .mailmap file sounds like a nice solution for my TODO :),
though I haven't tested it.

I took the brutal approach and now hopefully have a clean branch
commit:

There's still another possible TODO in the commit comment.
