That's also what I heard about ATI. Blob-free 2D might be possible for some cards. Nouveau people were working on getting rid of the last piece of blob. I don't know what the status is of that. It requires a newer version of X.org than what is in deltah anyway. 2D should work with the nv driver, which is arguably free. Most Intel chips work with a free driver. See also [1], [2].
