Do you know if the plan is to stick with the default GNOME Shell or
something else?

I have tried it on my machine. It works fine. I did not yet manage to change the background for the lockscreen dialog. Did you find a way how to handle that, yet?

That happened to me as well. I haven't found out why. I'll try on GNOME lists and channels to see if I can find more info about it. I'm looking in GDM reference manual as well <https://help.gnome.org/admin/gdm/>.
