I don't believe that raw format is capable of handling Exif/IPTC data...

Well.. both yes and no.

All still-camera raw formats also contains an embeded
jpeg, that is what the camera uses for its display, and
that embeded jpeg can contain exif, i think that is how
it works in the Nikon-case, but not Canon that beside the
quite big embeded jpeg has a small separate thumb containing
exif. And there is no absoulte "capable or not capable"
overall since every camera has its own proprietary raw
format (dcraw does them all).

Another thing.. (maybe a bit OT)

IMHO this can be achieved without much effort using python (there are
many libraries for reading and writing IPTC/Exif tags -
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mmpython/,
http://www.jfroche.be/open-source/python-iptc-parser, ...) And this
absolutely can be a start for the first python plugin for gcmd ;o)

Would be very nice, and once there are a piece of py-code
that is not so big, i may even understand it... ;-)
