So I've finally got around to joining the FSF (member #9429) and I even
get to appear on ThankGNUs 2011ยน. So now I can recommend that *you* join
the FSF as I won't be a hypocrite. :)

The FSF have been very supportive of MFS. They have provide us with free
software related merchandise such as books, stickers and badges. Our
siteยฒ is on LibrePlanet, the "growing global network of free software
hackers and activists" created by the FSF, and our mailing list is on
the FSF's nongnu.orgยณ. And as
https://my.fsf.org/associate/support_freedom says:
"Join with over 3,000 active members in 48 countries, representing a
diverse membership of computer users, software engineers, hackers,
students, and freedom activists.

When you sign up as a member, you join an informed society working
together to make a better world: one respectful of individual freedoms,
rights, and privacy, built on free software."

So, the blurb says that there are "over 3000" members but you are member #9xxx - Is the site out of date or do they just really really want to avoid saying that they have OVER NINE THOUSANDDDD members?
*ducks*

Unless something has changed, you're only an associate, not a member
in the usual sense with a say in the running of the organisation.

It's a fine thing to join, but don't be under any illusion it's
anything more than a supporter programme.

If you can only do one, I think http://fellowship.fsfe.org/ is more
worthwhile because it's aimed at us and FSFE is more democratic.

Its described as "associate membership".

Isn't supporting free software good?
And you do have the influence of not renewing your membership.

The FSF is aimed at us, it is a worldwide group. It has given, and does
give, support to MFS. It "is the principal organizational sponsor of the
GNU Operating System"ยน. The associate membership doesn't get you a
ballot paper but that doesn't mean you don't get influence as you can
vote with your feet.

Yes, and I suggest that having "membership" in there is misleading.

Yes, as I wrote, "it's a fine thing to join".

Has anyone doing that ever changed the FSF's policies?

http://fellowship.fsfe.org/ gives the influence of proposing actions,
voting and standing for election to the assembly.  Seems more direct.
