After spending the better part of a day on this, I still haven't been able to
fix the problem of Likhan not being recognized as a bengali font on Windows.
The closest I came was copying the new glyphs over to the old version of the
font (which WAS recognized). But I also needed to change some of the metrics,
and once I did that, importing the old VOLT data seemed to corrupt the font.
I'll have a final go tomorrow, but I'm on the verge of giving up on this
unless something new turns up. (I did drop the vertical metrics, and I'll
probably update Likhan within a couple of days.)
Anyway, I've fixed the major problem caused by this indirectly, by changing
the html files in the bengali document archive. It still specifies likhan as
the font, but via a stylesheet, so in machines without likhan, IE will use
the default bengali font. There's also a nicer interface to the archive at

To answer one of Kaushik's earlier questions, the text files can be seen in IE
directly, as long as you specify the encoding to be UTF-8.
