[Enigma-devel] Oxyd .DAT file format

Hi all,

I wanted to mention something I've been working on that may be relevant to
the Enigma project. I have put a good bit of effort into reverse
engineering the file format of the .DAT files used by Oxyd to store
information such as the levels, graphics, and sounds. I started this a long
time ago with the idea of eventually being able to create new levels to play
with the Oxyd game engine, but with the existence of Enigma there are other
possibilities. Probably the most interesting would be a completely
automated conversion of all the original Oxyd levels to be played with
Enigma. Daniel, I noticed you were asking about extracting the sounds on
the Oxyd yahoo group -- that would also be possible.

The current status is as follows: I can fully extract the audio and
16-color bitmaps. There is font data which I haven't looked into at all
yet, and Oxyd 1 also seems to include monochrome bitmaps and fonts that I
haven't looked into. As for the levels, I understand all of the basic
structure of how everything is stored, but there are still a lot of tedious
details to work out. Given how much time I'm able to spend on it, it will
probably be at least a couple of months before I can say I understand
everything about how the levels are represented.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention this, and find out if there is interest in
using some of this work for Enigma.

Jeremy
