A workaround for tabularray:

    \NewTableCommand\empty{}

I am unsure if we should use it.

Concerning selective escaping of brackets and stars (and "!", ">" for 
the verse package), I expected that if horizontal rules are implemented 
through CSS properties than it might be quite similar tasks. Actually 
<tbody> elements are used to group rows between lines and my guess failed.

\\! command between stanzas to get proper line count makes things a bit 
more complicated. I believed that some TeX trick may be used instead of 
requirement of the explicit command.

Frankly speaking I am surprised that explicit \\ was chosen instead of 
\obeylines and redefining \par.

If it were possible to assign attributes then attributes would be useful 
to apply specific flavor of the \\ command.

Instead of !!new-argument!! I prefer @@latex: % newline-arg...@@, but 
Ihor against using LaTeX comments to provide hints for export filters.
